Book Review: The Madness Underneath by Maureen Johnson

The Madness Underneath (Shades of London, #2)
Title: The Madness Underneath
Author: Maureen Johnson
Series: The Shades of London #2
Publisher: Putnam Juvenile
Publication Date: February 26, 2013
Length: 290 Pages
Amazon | Barnes and Noble | Book Depository

After her near-fatal run-in with the Jack the Ripper copycat, Rory Devereaux has been living in Bristol under the close watch of her parents. So when her therapist suddenly suggests she return to Wexford, Rory jumps at the chance. But Rory's brush with the Ripper touched her more than she thought possible: she's become a human terminus, with the power to eliminate ghosts on contact. She soon finds out that the Shades—the city's secret ghost-fighting police—are responsible for her return. The Ripper may be gone, but now there is a string of new inexplicable deaths threatening London. Rory has evidence that the deaths are no coincidence. Something much more sinister is going on, and now she must convince the squad to listen to her before it's too late.
In this follow-up to the Edgar Award-nominated The Name of the Star, Maureen Johnson adds another layer of spectacularly gruesome details to the streets of London that will keep you on the edge of your seat until the very end.
MY REVIEW
The Madness Underneath did not have the same creepy factor that The Name of the Star did, but it has a level of suspense all its own. From the beginning to the SHOCKING ending, The Madness Underneath takes the Shades of London to a new level. Rory wants to be around those that actually know what happened to her, but the only people that know are the Shades. They seem to want nothing to do with her, until she discovers that the tragic attack has turned her into the impossible, a human terminus. She has developed the power to eliminate ghosts with a single touch. While this puts her in a unique position to help the Shades, it also puts her in danger.

Rory is recovering from the nearly fatal attack of the Ripper copycat, and her parents refuse to allow her out of her sight. At the secret request of the Shades, Rory returns to London and Wexford, but she does not feel connected to the school. . Rory does not know how to get back into the rhythm of her life before the attack, and feels very out of place. This leads her to start lying to everyone she cares about, and failing school. Rory soon realizes that something else maybe happening around Wexford, and it may have something to do with her. As mysterious deaths start to happen around Wexford, Rory starts to suspect more than just coincidence.

I really love that direction that Maureen Johnson took with The Madness Underneath, because it really does change the direction of the story. When I first started the book, I really thought that ghosts no one else could see would be the most dangerous, just like The Name of the Star proved. In The Madness Underneath, it shows the danger of the unpredictable human element. I know that some of the reviews I read before diving into this book did not think the story lived up to the thrill of the first one. I will admit that the suspense and creepiness were not as potent in this book, but it still took the story to a new level of crazy. I can appreciate that, and with the events of The Madness Underneath, I can only imagine where the next Shades of London book is going to take us.

The events of The Madness Underneath are setting things into motion. I think that the third installment in this series is going to blow the first and second one out of the water. The ending has also left me with so many questions that I cannot wait until The Shadow Cabinet is released.

Why am I waiting?
I loved The Name of The Star, and really liked the idea that only certain people can see ghosts. I just cannot wait to see where Rory's adventure is going to go next, after her parents removed her from Wexford. It sounds like she might go back, and end up in the middle of another ghostly murder. All I know is that it sounds amazing!

Buy The Name of The Star

The day Louisiana teenager Rory Deveaux arrives in London marks a memorable occasion. For Rory, it's the start of a new life at a London boarding school. But for many, this will be remembered as the day a series of brutal murders broke out across the city, gruesome crimes mimicking the horrific Jack the Ripper events of more than a century ago.
Soon "Rippermania" takes hold of modern-day London, and the police are left with few leads and no witnesses. Except one. Rory spotted the man police believe to be the prime suspect. But she is the only one who saw him. Even her roommate, who was walking with her at the time, didn't notice the mysterious man. So why can only Rory see him? And more urgently, why has Rory become his next target? In this edge-of-your-seat thriller, full of suspense, humor, and romance, Rory will learn the truth about the secret ghost police of London and discover her own shocking abilities. (copied for Goodreads)

My Review

In Name of the Star, Aurora “Rory” Deveaux transfers from Louisiana to a boarding school in the old Whitechapel district of London. After Rory arrives, a series of murders mimicking the original Ripper murders start. It is not until the second murder, that the police and media start to realize the connection. Once everyone knows that there is a copycat “Ripper” on the loose, everyone knows exactly when he will strike. While this adds tension, Rory is more concerned about adjusting to not only a new school, but also a new country. She has the help of her roommate Jazza. Jazza introduces her to her friends, and explains the way the school works, and quickly becomes Rory's best friend.

At first, Name of the Star is just a story about a girl transferring schools and move to a new country, with some “Jack the Ripper” in the background. It is not until Rory sees a man, which is later to believe maybe involved with the Ripper murders that Jack the Ripper starts to take a solid place in the story. The biggest problem is no one else the man, not even Jazza who should have looked right at him. This also causes the Ripper to target Rory. This is where the story gets interesting, but I do not want to spoil it for anyone.

When I read the description for The Name of The Star, I knew I had to read this book. I have always been interested in the “Jack the Ripper” case, probably because it is a gruesome set of murders, and no one knows who did it. I loved the way Maureen Johnson worked in the elements and details of the original Ripper case into the story. It added a creepy but realistic feeling to the story. The anticipation is also heighten, because everyone knows exactly the date and time of the next murder.

I love Rory, and all her fascinating stories, and the way she understands things. I love the way Maureen describes the boarding school in The Name of the Star, because it makes me want to move there. I also like Jerome, not just, because he is Rory’s love interest, but because he is also extremely knowledgeable about the original “Ripper” murders. This helps anyone not familiar with the original murders to know what is going on. I like that Maureen obviously did hours of research to come up with the right details. I would recommend this book to any supernatural fan, or murder mystery fans, because it is the perfect mixture of both. I loved this book, and I am excited for the sequel, because I want to know what happens to Rory. If you have not read this one yet, you have to try it!
