Book Review: Insurgent by Veronica Roth

Insurgent (Divergent, #2)

Title: Insurgent
Author: Veronica Roth
Series: Divergent #2
Publisher: Harper Teen
Publication Date: May 1, 2012
Length: 525 Pages

One choice can transform you--or it can destroy you. But every choice has consequences, and as unrest surges in the factions all around her, Tris Prior must continue trying to save those she loves--and herself--while grappling with haunting questions of grief and forgiveness, identity and loyalty, politics and love.
Tris's initiation day should have been marked by celebration and victory with her chosen faction; instead, the day ended with unspeakable horrors. War now looms as conflict between the factions and their ideologies grows. And in times of war, sides must be chosen, secrets will emerge, and choices will become even more irrevocable--and even more powerful. Transformed by her own decisions but also by haunting grief and guilt, radical new discoveries, and shifting relationships, Tris must fully embrace her Divergence, even if she does not know what she may lose by doing so.
"New York Times" bestselling author Veronica Roth's much-anticipated second book of the dystopian "Divergent" series is another intoxicating thrill ride of a story, rich with hallmark twists, heartbreaks, romance, and powerful insights about human nature.

MY REVIEW
Insurgent is masterfully written to keep readers on their toes right before sweeping their legs out from under them completely. After the events in Divergent, the factions are heading to war and it could destroy everything. Insurgent picks up exactly where Divergent left off so readers do not miss any of the action. The pending war has everyone choosing a side and some of the choices will catch readers off guard. Dauntless is torn right down the middle, some supporting Erudite out fear and the others wanting to make sure that the events in Divergent do not happen again, by taking away Erudite`s power.

Insurgent at times took my breath away, and there were many emotional moments. Insurgent was much darker and deeper than Divergent, and I think that made me love it more. I loved Divergent, but I am head over heels with Insurgent. Insurgent really explores how people choose to survive. There are people who would rather take the easy way out whether right or wrong, and there are people who will stand up against oppression no matter the cost, and the few caught in the middle not quite sure what to do. This is just humanity at its core, Fight or Flight.

Tris in Insurgent is different from the Tris I knew in Divergent, simply because of events in the Divergent. As Tris tries to learn to live with what happened, she also has to confront the impending danger of the Erudites. The Divergent are at risk, and Tris and Four have the largest targets on their backs.

I was worried that Insurgent would not live up to the magnificence that is Divergent, but I am so beyond please that Insurgent is its own work of genius. I know this will be continue to be one of my favorite series, and I cannot wait for the next installment.

POSSIBLE SPOILER...

Honestly? I was very disappointed that so many problems in this novel were solved by gun use and shooting people. I think this story is so clever and I wish the author had explored other options. Just my humble opinion.
