Author: Dalya Moon
Publication Date: October 20, 2011

There’s one thing Maddie finds more tempting than red velvet cake: her coworker, Drew. All it takes is one of his sly winks or a playful hip-check by the cooler, and she’s incinerating the cookies. Her boyfriend would not approve.
When a reality TV crew descends upon the bakery, her simple summer job gets even more complicated. Maddie could become the Bakery Network’s next breakout star, if she can handle the heat of being cast as a show villain. Drew has an alternate idea: run away from everything, with him and his sexy tousled hair. She decides to take the leap, but when she finds out Drew’s been hiding a shocking secret, Maddie looks down at her packed suitcase and takes a moment to think. Should she fly off to Australia with a guy she hardly knows, or should she pick up her suitcase and hit him with it?(copied from Goodreads)

Melanie gave him a searing look. “My baby sister was practically assaulted, and you think this is funny?”

Out of all the mythical creatures I could have thought about, the phoenix popped into my head. Wasn't it a bird that exploded in flames, then was reborn? Unicorns, think about unicorns, I told myself. Or those winged horses.

It could happen tomorrow . . .

Author Ilsa J. Bick crafts a terrifying and thrilling novel about a world that could be ours at any moment, where those left standing must learn what it means not just to survive, but to live amidst the devastation.(copied from Goodreads

My Review

First off, I have to say, Ashes by Ilsa J. Bick is one of the most unique “zombie” novels I have read to date. Alex is a young girl who takes off into the woods to say goodbye to her parents, and most likely her life. She is dying from a brain tumor, and she wants to hike up the mountain to say goodbye. On the way up, she comes across a grandfather, and his granddaughter Ellie. As this happens, an electromagnetic pulse is set off, causing the grandfather’s pacemaker to stop working. The animals in the area also go a little crazy, with crows fighting each other, and deer jumping off cliffs. After a few minutes, everything seems to go back to normal. Alex and Ellie decide to hike to the nearest ranger station. On the way to the ranger station, they come across their first zombies.

While the zombies of Ashes eat humans like a typical zombie, they are far different from the traditional rotting corpses who hunger for brains. These zombies look normal, and can even operate weapons of sorts. They also have their primate instincts intact, so they are like a cross between a zombie and a cannibal. I actually find this type of zombie far more terrifying than the traditional type, especially if you meet more than one of them.

Along their journey, Tom, who has great survival training thanks to his military background, joins Alex and Ellie. They even become like a little pseudo family, and I love that dynamic. Well, as with anything, nothing says perfect, and they must venture out into the world to find out what happened, and what is going on. This is where trouble hits, but I will not go into details, because I do not want to spoil it for anyone. Ilsa J. Bick is a child psychiatrist, and knows how to play with her reader’s emotions throughout Ashes.

I have to say, I really loved the uniqueness that is Ashes. With all the zombie books out there, the key to being successful is doing something that readers have not seen. With Ashes, even with elements featured in other books, Ilsa J. Bick makes them complete unique, and all her own. I have to say I loved this book, and the way it ended had me wanting more. This is why I am glad it is just the beginning of a trilogy! If you like zombies, you have to read this book!

Waiting on Wednesday: Article 5

Waiting On Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we cannot wait to get our hands on.

This week my Waiting on Wednesday is

Title: Article 5
Author: Kristen Simmons
Expected Publication: February 14, 2012

New York, Los Angeles, and Washington, D.C., have been abandoned.
The Bill of Rights has been revoked, and replaced with the Moral Statutes.
There are no more police—instead, there are soldiers. There are no more fines for bad behavior—instead, there are arrests, trials, and maybe worse. People who get arrested usually don't come back.
Seventeen-year-old Ember Miller is old enough to remember that things weren’t always this way. Living with her rebellious single mother, it’s hard for her to forget that people weren’t always arrested for reading the wrong books or staying out after dark. It’s hard to forget that life in the United States used to be different.
Ember has perfected the art of keeping a low profile. She knows how to get the things she needs, like food stamps and hand-me-down clothes, and how to pass the random home inspections by the military. Her life is as close to peaceful as circumstances allow.
That is, until her mother is arrested for noncompliance with Article 5 of the Moral Statutes. And one of the arresting officers is none other than Chase Jennings…the only boy Ember has ever loved.(copied from Goodreads)

I have had my eye on this one for a few weeks, and every time I read the description I want to read it more!
It sounds so good!

Review: The Name of The Star (Shades of London #1) by Maureen Johnson

Title: The Name of the Star
Author: Maureen Johnson
Series: Shades of London
Reading level: Ages 12 and up
Hardcover: 384 pages
Publisher: Putnam Juvenile
Publication Date: September 29, 2011

Buy The Name of The Star

The day Louisiana teenager Rory Deveaux arrives in London marks a memorable occasion. For Rory, it's the start of a new life at a London boarding school. But for many, this will be remembered as the day a series of brutal murders broke out across the city, gruesome crimes mimicking the horrific Jack the Ripper events of more than a century ago.
Soon "Rippermania" takes hold of modern-day London, and the police are left with few leads and no witnesses. Except one. Rory spotted the man police believe to be the prime suspect. But she is the only one who saw him. Even her roommate, who was walking with her at the time, didn't notice the mysterious man. So why can only Rory see him? And more urgently, why has Rory become his next target? In this edge-of-your-seat thriller, full of suspense, humor, and romance, Rory will learn the truth about the secret ghost police of London and discover her own shocking abilities. (copied for Goodreads)

My Review

In Name of the Star, Aurora “Rory” Deveaux transfers from Louisiana to a boarding school in the old Whitechapel district of London. After Rory arrives, a series of murders mimicking the original Ripper murders start. It is not until the second murder, that the police and media start to realize the connection. Once everyone knows that there is a copycat “Ripper” on the loose, everyone knows exactly when he will strike. While this adds tension, Rory is more concerned about adjusting to not only a new school, but also a new country. She has the help of her roommate Jazza. Jazza introduces her to her friends, and explains the way the school works, and quickly becomes Rory's best friend.

At first, Name of the Star is just a story about a girl transferring schools and move to a new country, with some “Jack the Ripper” in the background. It is not until Rory sees a man, which is later to believe maybe involved with the Ripper murders that Jack the Ripper starts to take a solid place in the story. The biggest problem is no one else the man, not even Jazza who should have looked right at him. This also causes the Ripper to target Rory. This is where the story gets interesting, but I do not want to spoil it for anyone.

When I read the description for The Name of The Star, I knew I had to read this book. I have always been interested in the “Jack the Ripper” case, probably because it is a gruesome set of murders, and no one knows who did it. I loved the way Maureen Johnson worked in the elements and details of the original Ripper case into the story. It added a creepy but realistic feeling to the story. The anticipation is also heighten, because everyone knows exactly the date and time of the next murder.

I love Rory, and all her fascinating stories, and the way she understands things. I love the way Maureen describes the boarding school in The Name of the Star, because it makes me want to move there. I also like Jerome, not just, because he is Rory’s love interest, but because he is also extremely knowledgeable about the original “Ripper” murders. This helps anyone not familiar with the original murders to know what is going on. I like that Maureen obviously did hours of research to come up with the right details. I would recommend this book to any supernatural fan, or murder mystery fans, because it is the perfect mixture of both. I loved this book, and I am excited for the sequel, because I want to know what happens to Rory. If you have not read this one yet, you have to try it!

Review: Remembrance (Transcends Time Saga #1) by Michelle Madow

Title: Remembrance
Author: Michelle Madow
Series: Transcend Time Saga #1
Paperback: 314 pages
  • Publisher: Dreamscape Publishing
  • Publication Date: August 5, 2011
  • Language: English

New Hampshire high school junior Lizzie Davenport has been reincarnated from Regency Era, England ... but she doesn't know it yet.
Then Drew Carmichael transfers into Lizzie's school at the beginning of the year, and she feels a connection to him, almost like she knows him. She can't stop thinking about him, but whenever she tries talking with him about the mysteries behind her feelings, he makes it clear that he wants nothing to do with her. Reaching him is even more difficult because she has a boyfriend, Jeremy, who has started to become full of himself after being elected co-captain of the varsity soccer team, and her flirtatious best friend Chelsea starts dating Drew soon after his arrival. So why can't she seem to get him out of her mind?
Even though Lizzie knows she should let go of her fascination with Drew, the pair of them soon find that fighting fate isn't going to be easy. (copied from Goodreads)

My Review
Lizzie is happy with her life and her boyfriend Jeremy, even though Jeremy is having trouble finding time to spend with Lizzie. That is until Drew walks into the same class as her, and she feels an undeniable connection. Lizzie is still with Jeremy, and now her best friend Chelsea is dating Drew. Drew’s presence awakens something it her, and it is hard to be around him. Then she starts having flashes of another time, at first she thinks they maybe a fantasy or a dream, but it is too real. Soon, Lizzie discovers she is reincarnated, and she believes that in that past life Drew and she were in love. Remembrance is the first book in the Transcends Time Sage by Michelle Madow.

While being away from Drew is painful, Lizzie knows it is not right to hurt both Jeremy and Chelsea. The internal conflict within Lizzie is heartbreaking, because she is torn between her feelings for Drew, and her love for her best friend. Most of the book, Lizzie is reading Pride and the Prejudice by Jane Austen and begins to make connections with her past life. I love how Pride and the Prejudice is slightly tied to Lizzie’s story in Remembrance.

While Remembrance features the element of forbidden romance, it also has the unique twist of reincarnation. The common theme is second chances, which reincarnation serves as a second chance. I loved the flashes back to England in the early 1800s, and the epic love tale woven throughout. This book is a very entertaining, and magical read. I could not put it down, even though I was in desperate need of sleep. I am also excited that the story does not end here, and that it is just the beginning to a series.

I love the story of Lizzie and Drew in Remembrance, especially because it is not simple. While it is great when soul mates meet, but I do not stories where it is uncomplicated. I like how realistic the story, and decisions were, especially that they did not just dump everyone and run off to be together. This story is a great read, and I absolutely loved it. I highly recommended it to anyone who loves a good love story, it is a must read.

**Unabridged Bookshelf received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review**
