Book Review: 13 Hangmen by Art Corriveau

Title: 13 Hangmen
Author: Art Corriveau
Publisher: Amulet Books
Publication Date: April 1, 2012

BUY 13 HANGMEN

“Some people won’t believe any of this story. You might be one of them. But every single word is true. Tony DiMarco does catch a murderer, solve a mystery, and find a treasure—all in the first few days after he moves, unexpectedly, to 13 Hangmen’s Court in Boston. The fact that he also turns thirteen at the same time is not a coincidence.”
So begins the story of Tony and his friends—five 13-year-old boys, all of whom are living in the same house in the same attic bedroom but at different times in history! None are ghosts, all are flesh and blood, and somehow all have come together in the attic room, visible only to one another. And all are somehow linked to a murder, a mystery, and a treasure.

MY REVIEW

Tony DiMarco is not sure if it is a blessing or a curse that he inherited number 13 Hangman’s Court. Tony loves solving mysteries, and dreams of growing up to be a detective.  When he discovers a mystery, it is up to Tony to solve it. He is not going to be able to do it on his own, because this mystery goes decades in history. He has some help from the girl who works in the Curiosity Shop, but it is going to take more than that. Lucky for Tony, he does not have to solve it alone.

Tony has a group of friends his age to help him decipher events in the past that lead to the mystery in the present. Only Tony can see them, because they are all living in the same bedroom, but at different points in time. Each 13-year-old boy lends a key to the mystery and story surrounding 13 Hangmen’s Court. There is a lot of numerology in this book, with the numbers 9 and 13. Each boy can only see one another after their 13th birthday. In addition, Tony himself inherits his uncle’s house number 13 Hangmen’s Court on his 13th birthday.

The book delves into history, and how each historical event is connected to another. It is entertaining, but some of the events and people used are fictional or actual historical events were moved and changed to fit the story. This did not bother me, because I do not know a lot about the history of Boston, where the story takes place. I mean obviously, there are famous historic people and events that stand out in American History, which I liked. For any confusion on what actually happened and what was fictional for the book, the author explains it all at the end of the book.

I love history, so this book was a fun read. This book is geared more towards a middle grade or very early teen audience, and it would be more popular with teenagers of the male persuasion. This is simply because the main characters are all 13-year-old boys. The book does feature multiple viewpoints as each of the characters from the past get to tell their own story. It is a fun, quick read and I would defiantly give as a gift to any of the younger male family members.

Waiting on Wednesday: Blood Storm

Waiting On Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we cannot wait to get our hands on.
I am waiting on:

Title: Blood Storm
Author: Rhiannon Hart
Series: Lharmell #2
Publisher: Random House Australia
Expected Publication: August 1, 2012

The rain wanted to be ocean; the ice in the mountain caps wanted freedom. I never knew that water held such longing. The clouds above my head rumbled like a growling wolf, impatient to release their burden. I held the rain there a moment longer. I turned to Renata, heard her gasp and knew my eyes glowed blue.
I spoke a single word. 'Rain.'
In the Second Book of Lharmell, Zeraphina and Rodden must travel across the sea to find the elusive ingredients that will help them to win the coming battle against the Lharmellin – but shadows from Rodden’s dark past may come back to haunt him. And while she learns to harness her new abilities, Zeraphina still fights the hunger that makes her crave the north – not to mention avoiding her mother, who wants to see her wayward daughter married to a prince at all costs.

Why am I waiting?
After finishing the first book, Blood Song, last week. I knew I was already addicted to the series.
I know that getting this book from Australia is not going to easy, but I think it is well worth it. I hope that some day, the Lharmell series finds a home with a publisher in USA, so that a lot more people can enjoy this series.

What are you waiting on?
Make sure to leave me a link, so I can check it out.

I wanted to turn but I was held captive by the song on the wind. I’m coming, I told the voices. Please, wait for me.
When her sister becomes betrothed to a prince in a northern nation, Zeraphina’s only consolations are that her loyal animal companions are by her side – and that her burning hunger to travel north is finally being sated.
Already her black hair and pale eyes mark her out as different, but now Zeraphina must be even more careful to keep her secret safe. Craving blood is not considered normal behaviour for anyone, let alone a princess. So when the king’s advisor, Rodden, seems to know more about her condition than she does, Zeraphina is determined to find out more.
Zeraphina must be willing to sacrifice everything if she’s to uncover the truth – but what if the truth is beyond her worst nightmares?

 MY REVIEW

Princess Zeraphina knows that she is not like other girls, but she does her best to seem normal. Why is she different? Zeraphina hungers for blood, and she feels this yearning to travel to the north. When her sister, Lilith, receives a betrothal proposal from the largest kingdom, Pergamia, Zeraphina cannot pass up the opportunity to travel north. Zeraphina hopes to find answers to why she is different in Pergamia. The only story she knows is that she almost died when she was just a little girl, and when she recovered her hair turned to a shade of black, and her eyes became an ice blue.

Zeraphina knows she needs to find answers, but she also cannot risk her sister’s possible marriage to Prince Amis. Her country, Amentia, is poor, frozen and the people are starving. Without a marriage to the richest kingdom, their county will be in peril. When Zeraphina meets the Royal Family of Pergamia, she also meets the King’s young advisor, Rodden. Rodden regards her with suspicion, and seems to know more about Zeraphina’s condition than anyone does. The problem is he refuses to give Zeraphina answers, and he seems to be hiding something. It may have to do with the war between Pergamia, and a small country, Lharmell, especially since no one is allowed to talk about it.

Zeraphina also has two pets that follow her everywhere, a cat named Leap, and a golden eagle named Griffin. These stunning pets comfort Zeraphina, and they have important roles in Zeraphina’s life and story. Zeraphina seeks comfort from them and archery when the hunger for blood becomes overpowering. If she is not careful, she will have shaking fits to the point of blacking out.

Zeraphina is a strong female character, which is something I tend to like in my books nowadays. I also like how she takes control of her situation, and tries not to let it control her life. She also refuses to take no for an answer, when it comes to getting the answers she needs. I really admired Zeraphina’s strength and her need to protect Lilith from danger.

Now let us talk about Rodden, the mysterious, handsome advisor with all the secrets. First off, that description right there is kind of why I love him. You do not learn a lot about him until the end of the book, but he still manages to be sexy. I will admit, I have a thing for aloof, mysterious guys, because that mystery adds a bit of danger. You cannot help but wonder what he is hiding, and why just like Zeraphina.

This book is unique blend of supernatural, with a historical feel. While it takes on the myth of vampires, it does so in its own way. It does not feel like you are reading the same book with different characters. Since this books is only currently published in Australia getting a copy is not easy, but it is well worth it.
