ABOUT THE BOOK
Title: Arson
Author: Estevan Vega
Series: Arson #1
Publisher: StoneHouse Ink

ARSON is the first book in a Young Adult Paranormal series. Book two, ASHES, is also available now.

ARSON GABLE FEELS LIKE A FREAK. HE CAN CREATE FIRE. HE NEVER ASKED FOR IT. HE NEVER WANTED IT. BUT HE CAN'T SHUT IT OFF.

Before now, three things were true: he both loved and despised his grandmother; his life was going nowhere; and he was alone. But when a strange girl--who feels more normal behind a mask than inside her own skin--moves in next door, Arson hopes to find something he's never had: purpose. After years of living in fear, he will be forced to confront his haunting past and embrace the unknown as he walks the fine line between boy and monster. Edgy, realistic, and breathtaking, Arson, the chilling chronicle of an isolated teenager with unimaginable ability, is set to ignite the hearts and minds of a new generation.

MY REVIEW
Arson by Estevan Vega took me completely by surprise. This story is about the human condition, more than it is about a young boy with the ability to start fires with his mind. This is a story you read, that makes you more appreciative of everything you have. A work of fiction that feels like it could be a real story minus the fire starting. Arson Gable is a young man who thinks he is worthless, because his own grandmother tells him that every day. His grandmother both loves and hates him, and the emotions come out in crazy, often violent, mood swings. Arson has given up living, he is a shell of a person who goes to work, and comes home hoping to avoid his grandmother’s abusive mood swings.

This all changes when he meets Emery Phoenix, the new girl who moves in next door.  Emery is a teenager who wears a Halloween mask to cover her face at all times, just to feel normal. The two outcasts or “freaks” become fast friends. Arson feels like a normal teenage boy when he is around Emery, even though at a single outburst he can create fire from nothing. Emery’s life is not where near perfect, and her parents’ marriage is on it last breath.

The viewpoints alternate during the story, while the story is mainly told from Arson’s perceptive; it does give glimpses into the other characters. Other point-of-views include Emery, Emery’s mother Aimee, Emery’s Father, Joel, and Arson’s Grandmother Kay. The changes in the points of view are really to show how each person is perceived, and then how truly damaged they are as a person on the inside. This just points out how each character is human and flawed, and everyone has personal demons they have to face down. This may seem unnecessary, but it really rounds out the characters and gives the story a bit of human truth.

The story is so beautiful and so dark and tragic at the same time. I am curious where the next book in the series, Ashes, is going to take readers. Arson and Emery are beautifully written characters, from great book.

The best book I've ever read is A Wrinkle in Time by Madeline L'Engle!

Arson sounds like a great beginning to a series!

Thank you for the giveaway...sounds like a book my teen and I will "fight" over who gets to read first! LOL!

This sounds like it will earn a place on my favorites shelf. I love books that explore the human condition but have elements absent from our world. My two favorite authors do this well: Veronica Roth(Divergent trilogy) and Orson Scott Card(Ender's Game and Pathfinder are my favorites of his works)
