ABOUT THE BOOK
Title: Flukes
Author: Nichole Chase
Publication Date: October 6, 2012
Age Group: New Adult
Length: 268 Pages

Meena has a secret guarded closely by her family—a secret as dangerous as the sea, and buried just as deep. When court appointed community service workers are assigned to Flukes, the family-owned animal sanctuary, everyone is on high alert. It doesn’t help that Meena finds herself attracted to sexy-as-sin Blake Weathering, one of the new workers. If he wasn’t so distracting, she might be able to land Flukes a much-needed cruise line contract.

Blake Weathering, the first in his family to attend public school, has developed a tough image. Unfortunately it lands him in trouble. Now banned from his high school graduation ceremony, getting his diploma is dependent upon a community service gig cleaning fish crap. No diploma, no trust fund fortune—and no way to escape his overbearing father. The last thing he needs is the distraction of a mysterious girl with teal eyes who pulls at his heart strings.

When Blake discovers Meena’s secret, they are both thrown into a desperate search for information about her past. Two worlds pull them in opposite directions, and they will have to fight to hold onto all that really matters.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Nichole Chase
Nichole Chase is a daydreamer. No, really, just ask any of the math teachers that had the misfortune of seeing her name appear on their class schedule. For years she has had story lines and characters begging for attention, but she resolutely pushed them aside to focus on more normal (read, boring) jobs. Well, no longer! She is currently heeding the voices in her head and frantically writing their stories. Nichole resides in South Georgia with her husband, energetic toddler, super hero dog, Sulcata tortoise, and two cats. When not devouring novels by the dozens, you may find her writing, painting, crafting, or chasing her daughter around the house while making monster noises.

MY REVIEW

Flukes takes the mermaid myth and really take ownership of that mythology. I have always loved mermaid stories, since seeing “The Little Mermaid,” because Ariel was marvelous! I really loved Meena as a mermaid, and her loyalty and love for her family. Meena was also fierce and protective, which made me love her story even more. Meena does not have that many friends, because she has to protect her secret. When she starts to fall for the bad boy, Blake, she is starting to wonder if she can trust him to keep her secret.

Blake starts out as the bad boy with the motorcycle and community service, but very quickly, his true character is revealed. Meena brings a lot of the good out of him, even though he is not your typical bad boy. He just likes been thought of that way, until he lays eyes on Meena. I also think Blake is a great match for Meena, because he causes her to move outside her comfort zone. Their connection to each other is sweet and caring, which I really liked.

The author, Nichole Chase, has done a really beautiful job of creating an epic romance tale with a bit of a supernatural twist. I have to say that shortly after starting Flukes; I knew that this book was going to have me staying up reading late at night, because I would not be able to go to bed until I reached the end. I had to know how the story ended up, and there were a few twists that I did not quite see what was coming until it was right in my face.

Flukes was also a relatively quick read, so I did not have to say up too late trying to get to the end. It is a New Adult book, so there are situations that happen during the story that are not appropriate for younger teens. I loved the flow of the story, and how fast the book sucks you into the story. Any fan of mermaids would love this book, because Nichole Chase has done an unforgettable job!
