It’s two weeks before Triss turns 18, and her world is about to change into the most magical one imaginable as she readies herself to enter The Witch Avenue Order... that is until her mother’s disappearance. Instead of celebrating her transformation, she finds herself spreading rose petals into her mother’s empty grave.
When Logan, her best friend from junior high, moves back to town for college, he vows to help her find the answers she so desperately seeks surrounding her mother’s disappearance. As they begin uncovering clues, it becomes apparent that the life of white magic they both grew up loving is not what the majority practices, and their lives are in danger.
With a haunting feeling that her mother may still be alive, she begins to hear a call to the wilderness. Triss realizes that in order to find the answers she needs, she must learn the ways of her ancestors and become the hunter, not the hunted before it’s too late, and she becomes part of the lonely souls.

MY REVIEW
Lonely Souls by Karice Bolton is not just a tale of a young girl searching for her mother, it is a tale of life, understanding, and the overall power of love. At the beginning of the story, Triss discovers her mother has gone missing. Her coven pressures her and her aunt into have a memorial service, convinced she is no longer living. Triss does not agree and is determined to find her mother. At her mother’s wake, she reconnects with her lifelong friend, Logan. Logan agrees to help Triss find out what is going on, and help her solve the mystery of her mother’s disappearance.

As Triss delves deeper into the mystery, she discovers that not all witches practice white magic, and someone that practices black magic is after her. Logan vows to protect Triss no matter where their journey to find answers takes them. Triss has never learned how to protect herself or defend herself with magic, but if she wants to survive, she is going to have to learn.

Triss starts off a first as stubborn and independent, but very unsure of herself. As her journey continues, she is transformed into a strong female, willing to fight for her answers. This is all thanks to Logan teaching her the skills that she needs to survive and solve the mystery of her mother’s disappearance. Her most important lesson is that she needs to learn to let people in, to let love into her life. Logan may just be the right one for the job, if Triss will let him.

I really like the kindred friendship between Logan and Triss. They have grown up as friend their entire lives, until recent years when Logan and his mom moved away. As soon as Logan reenters her life, they pick up their friendship right where it left off. As their friendship shows signs of turning into something more, I instantly began rooting for them. This is not your instant love at first sight, these two people who have grown up together, and they know each other’s secrets. I really liked that element of the story.

I also really like what Karice Bolton did with the mythology of the witchcraft, the covens, and even the Lonely Souls. It is a very different perspective that I have read in previous books about witchcraft. I really think it is a refreshing new series, and I cannot wait to read the next installment.
