Book Review: Blood on the Moon by Jennifer Knight

Blood on the Moon (Blood on the Moon, #1)
Title: Blood on the Moon
Author: Jennifer Knight
Series: Blood on the Moon #1
Publisher: Perseus Books
Publication Date: August 30, 2011

As Faith Reynolds enters her freshman year of college, she is a complete and utter nervous wreck.  With her best friend Derek suddenly pulling out the romance card and her dark, mysterious classmate staring her down at every turn, Faith somehow feels stuck in the middle without dating either one.  And fortune may or may not be with her when a devilshly sexy stranger offers her a welcome escape.
Boys, romance, classes, and annoying roommates are all within the realm of the expected for a college frosh.  Trying to solve the mysterious murders of young college coeds near campus is not.  Darkness seems to be creeping into every corner of Faith's life, no matter the hour.  And when she seeks the truth, danger seems to be the only thing that finds her.
Faith is well aware of the strange currents in the air, particularly when she sets off static sparks with everything she touches.  Before long, she finds herself entrenched in the deep-seeded battle between werewolves and vampires.  The war has reached the tipping point, and Faith has the power to determine where the scales fall.  But the most important question may be with whom does her loyalty lie?
Deliciously suspenseful and immediately addictive, Blood on the Moon features a headstrong heroine and all of the thrills, chills, and otherworldly boys with deadly charm that a human could ask for.

Blood on the Moon by Jennifer Knight is a twist on the typical werewolf versus vampire story that has been so popular in the past few years. That twist happens to be Faith Reynolds. Faith Reynolds has always been a good judge of the people around her, almost like a six sense. This helps her, because she is hard to trust anyone, especially men. Her best friend, Derek, is the only man she trusts, and even she knows she can never trust him with her heart again. Derek wants to be more than friends, but Faith is not willing to risk her heart after the last time they dated, and he cheated. She just wants her and Derek to remain best friends as they always have been.

Things become more complicated for Faith, when she meets her roommate Courtney’s new boyfriend Lucas. Lucas does not seem to like her as soon as they meet, but Faith has no clue what she could have done. When she meets the handsome Vincent Stone, while out dancing, she does not understand why Lucas wants her to stay away from him. It is not too longer before she finds out why, when Vincent attacks her to provoke Lucas. This puts Faith in the center of feud between vampires and werewolves that has been going on for centuries. For her own protection, Faith has to stay in Lucas’ dorm room, and a romance begins to blossom.

At first, I was not a fan of the relationship between Lucas and Faith, because Lucas was a jerk. As time goes on, I started to realize that the reason Lucas was a jerk was to try to keep Faith at arm’s length to protect her. At the end of the story, I had grown to love the relationship between Lucas and Faith. Faith at the beginning of the book is very unsure of what she wants to do, or where she wants to be in a few years. As the book goes on, she starts to grow up, and becomes more sure of herself. I really like the journey that Faith takes in Blood on the Moon.

Two things I did not like about Blood on the Moon, the overused vampire versus werewolf story line, and the grammatical errors in the finished print copy. Faith does change it up the feud storyline a little bit, so in the end I did like the story. I normally I do not even notice grammatical errors, but in this finish copy there were a few that stood out enough for me to notice. That distracted me from the story, and if it were not a finish copy, they would not have bothered me. I hate pointing problems I have with a book, but I felt that it was necessary to make my review honest. I still liked the story of Blood on the Moon, and I will be continuing the adventure by reading the next book, Blood Crave.

Cover Reveal: Release

Today I have the cover of Release by M.R. Merrick to reveal! Release is the third book in The Protector series.

DECEMBER 10, 2012

After uniting the shifters and calling in reinforcements, Chase has to face his toughest challenge yet: learning to control his emotions. But as tensions rise and his powers grow, controlling his emotions becomes the least of his problems.

Terrorized by a multi-shifter who is hell-bent on turning him, Chase questions just how far he’s willing to go to stop his father.  Meanwhile, Tiki’s virtuous nature has placed him in the middle of Vincent’s past, leaving Chase to oppose a senate of vampires and defend a demon he hates.

Trying to balance his friends, his enemies, and his inner demons, Chase is left searching for answers about the Mark, his destiny, and where he can find the next soul piece. Stopping Riley is his top priority, but as more obstacles arise, he finds himself doubting all the decisions he’s made - especially regarding Rayna.
One thing is for certain: Chase has finally realized that he doesn’t know anything. The light doesn’t always quell the darkness, the monsters don’t always stay in the shadows, and the past doesn’t always stay in the past - sometimes, the demons inside are the hardest to fight.

The cover is very stunning! I love the lighting and the purple votex in the middle of the cover. I think this cover is just beautiful.

Now it is your turn to let me know what you think of the cover in the comments!

Waiting on Wednesday: The Farm

The Farm

Waiting On Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we cannot wait to get our hands on.

Title: The Farm
Author: Emily McKay
Publisher: Berkley Trade
Publication Date: December 4, 2012

Life was different in the Before: before vampires began devouring humans in a swarm across America; before the surviving young people were rounded up and quarantined. These days, we know what those quarantines are—holding pens where human blood is turned into more food for the undead monsters, known as Ticks. Surrounded by electrical fences, most kids try to survive the Farms by turning on each other…
And when trust is a thing of the past, escape is nearly impossible.
Lily and her twin sister Mel have a plan. Though Mel can barely communicate, her autism helps her notice things no one else notices—like the portion of electrical fence that gets turned off every night. Getting across won’t be easy, but as Lily gathers what they need to escape, a familiar face appears out of nowhere, offering to help…
Carter was a schoolmate of Lily’s in the Before. Managing to evade capture until now, he has valuable knowledge of the outside world. But like everyone on the Farm, Carter has his own agenda, and he knows that behind the Ticks is an even more dangerous threat to the human race...

Why am I waiting?
I think this sounds like a very interesting. I am wondering what the bigger threat is besides the vampires. It sounds like it is going to be action packed as they try to get off the farm. I am curious, and I am impatiently waiting for this one to release to get my hands on it.

Summer is the best part of the year in Winston, California, and the Fourth of July is the highlight of the season. But the perfect town Clare remembers has changed, and everyone is praying that this summer will be different from the last two—that this year's Fourth of July festival won't see one of their own vanish without a trace, leaving no leads and no suspects. The media are in a frenzy predicting a third disappearance, but the town depends on tourist dollars, so the residents of Winston are trying desperately to pretend nothing's wrong.
And they're not the only ones hiding something.
Clare, a seamstress who redesigns vintage clothing, has been blessed—or perhaps cursed—with a gift: she can see people's pasts when she touches their clothes. When she stumbles across a denim jacket that once belonged to Amanda Stavros, last year's Fourth of July victim, Clare sees her perfect town begin to come apart at the seams.
In a town where appearance means everything, how deep beneath the surface will Clare dig to uncover a murderer?

Mini Vacation

I just wanted to let everyone know that I will not be responding to emails or comments until Saturday.
I am leaving on a trip with my husband, which should be a lot of fun. I do have a few post already scheduled for this week, including a cover reveal tomorrow, and the Flight blog tour on Thursday. The only problem is that the place we are going has no cell phone reception or internet service. It is going to be really nice to disconnect and relax, but I will also not be able to connect to you guys.
Getting ready is also the reason for the lack of posting for the last couple of days. It has been a bit hectic over here.

This trip should equal a lot of reading time, so be prepared for lots of reviews when I return!
I should be back Saturday afternoon, so don't worry I will not be gone long.

Thank you for visiting Unabridged Bookshelf!!

Waiting on Wednesday: Splintered

Waiting On Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we cannot wait to get our hands on.

I am waiting on:

Title: Splintered
Author: A. G. Howard
Publisher: Amulet Books
Publication Date: January 1, 2012

This stunning debut captures the grotesque madness of a mystical under-land, as well as a girl’s pangs of first love and independence. Alyssa Gardner hears the whispers of bugs and flowers—precisely the affliction that landed her mother in a mental hospital years before. This family curse stretches back to her ancestor Alice Liddell, the real-life inspiration for Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. Alyssa might be crazy, but she manages to keep it together. For now.
When her mother’s mental health takes a turn for the worse, Alyssa learns that what she thought was fiction is based in terrifying reality. The real Wonderland is a place far darker and more twisted than Lewis Carroll ever let on. There, Alyssa must pass a series of tests, including draining an ocean of Alice’s tears, waking the slumbering tea party, and subduing a vicious bandersnatch, to fix Alice’s mistakes and save her family. She must also decide whom to trust: Jeb, her gorgeous best friend and secret crush, or the sexy but suspicious Morpheus, her guide through Wonderland, who may have dark motives of his own.

I first became interested in this book when I heard the synopsis, and then I saw the cover revealed. I love all the little bugs, and flowers all over the cover. I really want to see where A. G. Howard takes this twist on Alice in Wonderland.

What are you waiting on?
